Creating simple symmetric art for your home

I moved into my one bedroom apartment over a year ago.  Every room has been decorated and re decorated over and over again in this past year, except my bedroom.  It is extremely small, so small I had to take the door off the hinges to fit my queen sized bed. Luckily, it does fit my bed, a small nightstand, a dresser, and chair quite nicely.  The issue has always been, what do I put on the walls that won't overwhelm me when sleeping?  I did not want to clutter the walls with a bunch of small art or put one piece that looks awkward by itself.  I toyed with many ideas until I finally came to the decision of making my own art.  I wanted something that would frame by bed, create movement, and add something interesting without being too much.  With all that said, I created a symmetric design that would hang above my headboard.

1. I started by taping 4 pieces of 11x14 tracing paper together. I folded the paper in half, and started to create a design on one side freehand.  Keep in mind the positive and negative spaces you are drawing to create an interesting design when finished.
2. I quickly filled in my design with a dark marker so I did not make any mistakes while cutting, I also used the marker to create a few more swirls and extras at the end.
3. Cut out the design using a cutting board and x-acto knife.  Make sure to use a new blade, key to success while cutting out a design.
4. Once I had my design all cut out I opened the paper to see my design I had created.
5. I used a 40x30 canvas and spray painted it gold.
6. Placed my paper design in the center of canvas, and used a tape measure to make sure it was perfectly centered.
7. Traced the outline of the stencil onto the canvas.
8. Started painting!  I only used black and white paint to not make it too busy, as the design was already very bold.  By blending the two paints together it created a really nice gradient.
Total cost $20 (Canvas) all other supplies I had from past projects.

Overall, it took me a few hours, and I could not be happier with how it turned out!  It was just what my bedroom needed.  This has definitely inspired me to continue doing small projects in my bedroom,   more on that soon! Hope this inspires you to create something new for your home.
